Fed: Senator Boswell faces challenge

BRISBANE, Dec 1 AAP - Veteran Queensland Nationals senator Ron Boswell will face five
challengers in a preselection battle tomorrow.

The 65-year-old grandfather has held his Senate spot since 1983 and sections of the
party believe it is now time for him to step aside to allow renewal.

But Senator Boswell says he wants to stay on and has received the backing of Prime
Minister John Howard, who credits him with ending the fortunes of Pauline Hanson's One
Nation.

The key challenger seeking the vote of the 330-members of the Nationals' central council
meeting in Brisbane is expected to be army officer and former political adviser James
Baker, 39.

Other aspirants include Toowoomba transport operator Scott Buchholz, 38, Maryborough
home finance manager Bevan Collingwood, 48, Brisbane accountant David Goodwin, 28, Townsville
administrator Mary McAuliffe, 25, and Gympie consultant Evan McDonald, 47.

Mr Goodwin is widely considered as a running mate for Senator Boswell.

Key Queensland Nationals figures were unavailable for comment this morning as they
were in a party management committee meeting.
