Today's birthday April 4: Former NSW police minister Carl Scully (1957-).

Australian politician Carl Scully was the NSW police minister until his resignation
late last year.

Born on April 4 1957, in Sydney, he graduated in law from Macquarie University in Sydney
where he first became active in the Australian Labor party.

Scully began his career as a solicitor before being elected to the NSW Legislative
Assembly as a member of the safe Labor seat of Smithfield in 1990.

A member of the dominant right-wing faction of the NSW Labor party, he became minister
for small business and regional development, minister for state development and minister
for public works and services in the mid 1990s.

His first major portfolio came in 1997 when he was appointed to former Premier Bob
Carr's government as roads minister, a job he held until 2003.

He went on to become housing minister from 2003 to 2005, and when Carr announced his
resignation in July 2005, Scully flagged his intention to run for premier.

However, he withdrew from the contest when it became apparent that Health Minister
Morris Iemma had majority support in the Labor caucus.

When Iemma became premier, Scully was appointed police minister.

He remained police minister until October 2006 when he resigned after lying to parliament
twice in two weeks over the aftermath of the December 2005 Cronulla riots.

In January this year, Scully announced he would not recontest his seat of Smithfield
at the state election.

The safe Labor seat was retained by Ninos Khoshaba.
