Fed: 100 Australians received new hearts in 1995 survey

A survey's found Australian doctors performed 100 heart transplants in 1995 with 91
patients living to tell the tale.
The number of heart transplants increased by 7.5 per cent over the previous year.
The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare survey also reported 69 lung transplants
and 13 combined heart-lung transplants.
Overall, cardiac surgery procedures in Australia increased by an estimated 3.6 per
cent compared with the previous year.
The report says heart disease is a major cause of death, causing 30 per cent of all
Australian fatalities in 1997.
