WASHINGTON -- Secretary of State Colin Powell departs today for a five-day trip to Asia intended to smooth over tensions with South Korea and build support for a U.N. Security Council resolution condemning North Korea's nuclear weapons program, administration officials said.
Though the official purpose of Powell's trip is to attend the inauguration of South Korean's new president, Roh Moo-hyun, on Tuesday, he will also stop in Tokyo and Beijing, with North Korea and Iraq at the top of his agenda, officials said.
