Green trends in detergents include a shift away from phosphate, which is blamed for polluting lakes and rivers. The shift has encompassed almost all brands and types of household detergents, although it is only beginning in industrial and institutional cleaners.
Largely driven by state and local regulations, home detergent makers have switched to zeolite-based formulations, according to Lynne Smart, an analyst with SRI International (Menlo Park, CA). Phosphates, which are nutrients, have been blamed for excessive growth of algae and other microorganisms that use up oxygen and block sunlight needed by other aquatic life.
